I’m always on the lookout for skincare ingredients that help in stimulating my skin’s collagen production and evening out my skin tone and fading any hyperpigmentation I have.
As I’m sure you already know, good skin starts from the inside out by making sure you’re feeding your body (and skin) with the right nutrients and taking care of it externally. But that doesn’t mean that skincare products shouldn’t put in the hard work too.
That’s where vitamin c comes in.
Why is it important?
Vitamin C is one of the best anti-aging ingredients on the market. It is also an antioxidant and aids in neutralising free radicals on the skin and the associated sun damage that comes with it. Living in Australia, you can never be too careful with protecting your skin from the damaging UV rays as the sun can be quite harsh. Products with vitamin c can be used by both men and women.
What can it do?
- It stimulates your skin’s collagen production. Collagen is naturally produced by the body. It keeps the skin plump and supple. As you get older (think the late 20s and beyond), your body starts producing less collagen and this is when you start to see your skin looking dull and somewhat sallow
- It protects your skin from sun damage
- It enhances your skin’s hydration and moisture retention
- It brightens your complexion
- Possible reduction in pore size
- Fades scars and hyperpigmentation
- Reduces lines and wrinkles
- Improves firmness and elasticity (via the increase in collagen production)
Things to note
When you start using products with vitamin c (especially a serum), a little stinging may occur as your skin adjusts to it. It is best to stick to a gentle concentration of about 10-15% and monitor your skin’s reaction to it. Most importantly, you must use a sunscreen daily with a minimum broad spectrum of SPF30+, if not you’ll be undoing all the benefits you gain from using vitamin c
Top Picks
Here are some of my top picks of products with vitamin c based on the ingredient composition and the reviews
This is quite an insightful article. As a guy I’ve actually never purchased a cream with the view to enhance my vitamin c intake. You’ll appreciate my skincare routine is not that involved. Where do I start?
Hi Dean,
That’s a very good question! I’ll make sure to write a post that explores how guys (and gals) can start their skincare routine.
