10 Benefits Of Practising Yoga

I’ve always been drawn to the graceful movements of those practising yoga mid-exercise. There’s just something about being forced to focus on your movement when practising any form of physical exercise that resonates with me. It might be because I’m forced to shut out the voice in my head if I want to avoid any form of unnecessary injury or stumble mid-workout. If I’m being honest, yoga (like running) is one of those parts of physical culture that I’ve admired from afar but being too scared to partake in because I’m not flexible and can’t hold a pose for long. I still remember my first yoga class in Wollongong because I spent half the time laughing at myself because my attempt to hold most of the poses were sheer comedy.

Fast forward a few years and my interest in yoga haven’t waned. As much as I’d like to walk into a yoga class and practice some of the movements, I’ve decided to start slow at home by using beginner-friendly yoga DVDs to practice and build my flexibility because every little practice session helps. Having said that, there’s a lot more to yoga than flexibility. Sure, it’s a lifestyle for some, but there are a number of benefits that come with practising yoga consistently.

  • It improves muscle strength
  • It can help in reducing blood pressure
  • Protection from injury
  • It aids in maintaining a balanced metabolism
  • It leads to a better posture 
  • It improves bone health
  • It alleviates stress
  • It helps you sleep deeper
  • It releases tension from your joints and limbs
